Faith and Grace: The Doorway to God’s Favor

Faith is the Key to Accessing God’s Grace

In Romans 5:2, Paul writes, “through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” This verse highlights that faith is the means by which we enter into God’s grace. Grace, defined as God’s unmerited favor, is something we can never earn by our own efforts or works. It is a gift freely given by God through Jesus Christ. However, faith is the key that unlocks this grace and allows us to stand in it.

Faith is essentially the trust and belief that God’s grace, made available through the sacrifice of Jesus, is sufficient for our salvation and for every need in our lives. Ephesians 2:8 affirms this: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” Without faith, we cannot experience the fullness of God’s grace. Faith is the open hand that receives the free gift of grace that God offers to us. Just as a door gives access to a room, faith opens the way for us to enter into the abundant grace that God has poured out through Christ.

Faith Acknowledges Our Need for Grace

One of the primary ways faith gives us access to grace is by acknowledging our need for it. Faith admits that we are unable to save ourselves, that we fall short of God’s standard, and that we need His grace to cover our sins and shortcomings. Romans 3:23-24 tells us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Faith recognizes that we are broken and in need of a Savior, and that only God’s grace can bring us into right relationship with Him.

Without faith, there is no recognition of our need for grace, and thus no access to it. Faith is humble, understanding that we are spiritually bankrupt apart from God’s intervention. James 4:6 reminds us, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” When we come to God in faith, acknowledging our need for His grace, He generously bestows it upon us. It is faith that humbly accepts God’s gift of grace, understanding that we cannot earn it or deserve it, but that it is freely given to those who believe.

Faith is the Channel Through Which Grace Flows

Faith acts as the channel through which God’s grace flows into our lives. Titus 3:5-7 emphasizes this: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Grace is poured out abundantly upon us, not because of anything we have done, but through faith in the finished work of Jesus.

Grace not only saves us but empowers us to live the Christian life. 2 Peter 1:3 says, “as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.” This divine power, this grace, flows to us through faith. The more we trust God and lean on Him, the more we experience His grace at work in every aspect of our lives. Faith opens the door for grace to empower us in our weaknesses, transform us, and enable us to live out the purpose that God has for us.

Faith Justifies Us and Puts Us in Right Standing with God

Faith in God’s grace justifies us, meaning it puts us in right standing with God. Romans 5:1 says, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Justification is a legal term that means being declared righteous or free from guilt. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, God declares us righteous, not because of our works but because of His grace. It is through faith that we receive this justification, and it is through faith that we are able to stand in the grace of God without fear of condemnation.

This standing in grace gives us access to all the blessings and promises of God. Romans 8:1 assures us, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Because of God’s grace, accessed through faith, we are no longer under judgment for our sins but are free to walk in the Spirit and enjoy the fullness of life that God has promised. Faith grants us peace with God and confidence in His love and acceptance.

Faith Connects Us to God’s Grace in Trials

Not only does faith give us access to grace for salvation, but it also connects us to God’s grace in the midst of trials and hardships. Romans 5:3-4 continues, “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Faith allows us to tap into God’s grace during difficult times, enabling us to endure and grow through challenges. It is grace that strengthens us, sustains us, and gives us the ability to persevere when we are faced with suffering.

In times of weakness, faith leads us to God’s throne of grace, where we receive the help we need. Hebrews 4:16 invites us, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Faith doesn’t just look to God for salvation, it looks to Him for daily grace—the strength to overcome, the power to keep going, and the comfort that sustains us through pain and adversity. Faith allows us to approach God with confidence, knowing that His grace is sufficient for every need we face.

Faith Allows Us to Rejoice in God’s Grace

Faith in God’s grace brings joy and hope. Romans 5:2 says that through faith we have access into grace “in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Faith allows us to experience the fullness of joy that comes from standing in God’s grace. We can rejoice because we know that our future is secure in God’s hands, and His grace is not only for the present moment but for eternity. The hope we have in God’s grace gives us a reason to rejoice, even in the face of difficulties.

This joy is rooted in the assurance that God’s grace is greater than our failures, our circumstances, and even our weaknesses. 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Faith gives us the confidence to celebrate God’s grace, knowing that His power is made perfect in our moments of weakness. We can rejoice because we stand in grace, not by our own merit but by the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Faith in Grace Produces Hope and Confidence in the Future

Finally, faith in God’s grace produces a confident hope in the future. Because we stand in grace, we can face the future with assurance, knowing that God’s grace will carry us through every season of life and ultimately into eternity with Him. Romans 8:30-31 says, “Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Faith in God’s grace gives us the hope of glory, the confident expectation that we will be glorified with Christ and share in His eternal inheritance.

This hope is not based on our performance but on God’s unchanging grace. Titus 3:7 tells us that we have been “justified by His grace”, and we have become heirs of eternal life through Jesus Christ. This assurance allows us to live with confidence, knowing that our future is secure in God’s hands. Faith in God’s grace gives us peace for today and hope for tomorrow, anchoring our souls in the knowledge that God’s grace will never fail us.

Conclusion: Faith Opens the Door to Grace

Faith is the key that opens the door to God’s abundant grace. Through faith, we access the grace that saves us, sustains us, and empowers us to live the Christian life. Faith acknowledges our need for grace, connects us to God’s provision in every circumstance, and gives us peace, joy, and hope in His promises. Romans 5:2 beautifully captures this truth: “Through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” As we walk by faith, we continue to receive and stand in the grace that God so generously gives us, confident that His grace is sufficient for every need.
