What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and how do they function in the church?

Empowered to Build: The Gifts of the Holy Spirit and Their Function in the Church

The Spirit Equips Every Believer for Kingdom Work

When Jesus ascended to the Father, He did not leave His people powerless. Through the Holy Spirit, He gifted every believer with supernatural abilities to serve, strengthen, and unify the body of Christ. These gifts are not rewards for spiritual maturity nor marks of status—they are manifestations of God’s grace, uniquely distributed to each member of the church for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:4–7
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.

Spiritual gifts are not about personal recognition—they are about building others up. The church flourishes when every member functions in their Spirit-given role. No gift is insignificant, and no believer is giftless. The Holy Spirit empowers the church by empowering each believer to be a living instrument of God’s grace and truth.

Gifts That Reveal God’s Wisdom and Power

The Holy Spirit distributes various gifts that reveal the wisdom, knowledge, and supernatural power of God in the life of the church. These gifts draw attention to God’s presence and remind the church that it operates not by human strength, but by divine enablement.

1 Corinthians 12:8–10
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

  • Word of Wisdom: The Spirit gives supernatural insight into how to apply God’s truth to complex situations. This gift brings clarity where confusion abounds.

  • Word of Knowledge: This is a Spirit-revealed understanding of facts, circumstances, or truths that could not be known naturally. It often confirms God’s presence and direction.

  • Faith: This is not saving faith, but a Spirit-empowered trust in God to accomplish the impossible. It inspires courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

  • Gifts of Healings: The Spirit may grant physical, emotional, or spiritual healing through individuals to demonstrate God’s compassion and power.

  • Working of Miracles: Beyond healing, this refers to divine acts that defy natural explanation—signs that validate the gospel and glorify God.

  • Prophecy: This is speaking forth God’s message for encouragement, conviction, or edification. True prophecy aligns with Scripture and glorifies Christ.

  • Discerning of Spirits: The Spirit grants the ability to recognize the source behind spiritual activity—whether from God, man, or the enemy.

  • Tongues and Interpretation: Speaking in tongues is Spirit-enabled speech in unknown languages, often directed toward God. Interpretation makes these messages understandable and edifying to the church.

These gifts are powerful reminders that God is actively involved in His church. They are to be exercised with humility, accountability, and a commitment to love.

1 Corinthians 14:1
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Gifts That Strengthen and Sustain the Church

In addition to the more demonstrative gifts, the Spirit also equips believers with essential, practical gifts that ensure the church is nourished, served, and led with excellence.

Romans 12:6–8
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

  • Prophecy: As in Corinthians, this gift communicates God’s truth in a way that builds up the church.

  • Ministry (Service): This gift enables believers to meet practical needs with a servant’s heart, reflecting Christ’s humility.

  • Teaching: The Spirit empowers teachers to clearly explain and apply Scripture, building up the church in truth.

  • Exhortation: This is Spirit-empowered encouragement that stirs others to faithfulness, repentance, or courage.

  • Giving: While all are called to give, some are specially gifted to give with extraordinary generosity and joy, furthering the work of the kingdom.

  • Leadership: The Spirit gives wisdom, vision, and diligence to those called to lead God’s people with integrity.

  • Mercy: This gift shows the tender compassion of Christ, especially to the hurting, sick, or overlooked.

Each of these gifts is vital. The Spirit uses them to care for the church both spiritually and practically. Every gift is a channel of God’s grace, and when they function together, the church becomes a radiant witness to the world.

One Body, Many Members, One Purpose

Spiritual gifts are not for private display—they are for public service. They are not tools for self-exaltation, but instruments of unity and edification. The Holy Spirit sovereignly distributes them to each believer as He wills.

1 Corinthians 12:11
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

The gifts are diverse, but the Spirit is the same. They manifest in different forms, but their purpose is unified—to glorify Christ and build His body. When each member functions in their gift with love and humility, the church reflects the beauty and power of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:18–20
But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now indeed there are many members, yet one body.

No gift is superior to another, and no believer is dispensable. The hand cannot say to the eye, “I don’t need you.” The Spirit has placed each person where they belong and gifted them for where they serve.

Operating in the Gifts with Love and Maturity

While spiritual gifts are vital, they must be exercised in the context of love. Without love, gifts lose their value and become harmful rather than helpful.

1 Corinthians 13:1–2
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy… but have not love, I am nothing.

Love is the environment in which spiritual gifts grow and bear fruit. Gifts may vary in visibility and impact, but love is the highest calling for all.

Additionally, spiritual maturity matters. The Spirit does not give gifts for entertainment or personal glory, but for edification. Those who operate in the gifts must be rooted in Scripture, accountable to godly leadership, and sensitive to the Spirit’s leading.

Conclusion: Using Our Gifts for God’s Glory

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are sacred trust. They are not reserved for a few—they are available to every believer. They are not for chaos but for construction. When the church understands, embraces, and faithfully uses the gifts God has given, the body of Christ grows in power, unity, and love.

1 Peter 4:10–11
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ…

May we each discover, develop, and deploy our spiritual gifts—not for our own recognition, but for the glory of God and the growth of His church. The Spirit has gifted us, not just to attend church, but to be the church—empowered to build, serve, and shine.
