Signs of the Times: What Will Precede the Great Tribulation

In the Olivet Discourse, Jesus offers a detailed prophecy about the events leading up to the Great Tribulation. As recorded in the Gospels, He describes a series of specific signs that will mark the beginning of the end, indicating that the final period of distress is imminent. These signs are not random but part of God’s sovereign plan, serving as a warning for all who are willing to listen and prepare.

In Matthew 24:6-8, Jesus states:
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

This passage reveals the initial indicators of the approaching tribulation, often referred to as “the beginning of sorrows.” Let’s explore each of these signs and their significance, as they serve as a prelude to the unfolding of the Great Tribulation.

The Escalation of Conflict: Wars and Rumors of Wars

One of the first signs Jesus mentions is the increase in wars and conflicts. The phrase “wars and rumors of wars” suggests both actual conflicts and the constant threat of new ones. In our world today, conflicts arise frequently, but the escalation leading up to the tribulation will be unprecedented.

In Luke 21:9, Jesus reiterates this warning:
“But when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.”

The increase in wars points to a growing sense of instability and chaos among nations. Jesus cautions His followers not to be alarmed by these events, as they are part of a larger divine timeline. Rather than indicating the immediate end, these conflicts serve as a prelude, setting the stage for the events that will follow.

James 4:1-2 sheds light on the root cause of such conflicts:
“Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war.”

The selfish desires and unchecked ambitions of humanity lead to strife, reflecting the sinful condition of the world. As the tribulation approaches, this condition will only worsen, manifesting in widespread geopolitical turmoil and increasing hostility between nations.

Widespread Natural Disasters: Famines, Earthquakes, and Pestilences

Jesus also speaks of natural disasters as precursors to the Great Tribulation. He lists famines, earthquakes, and pestilences as significant indicators of the approaching end times. These calamities are more than mere coincidences; they are signs of a world groaning under the weight of sin and awaiting redemption.

In Revelation 6:5-6, we see the devastating impact of famine during the end times:
“When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, ‘Come and see.’ So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.’”

The imagery of the black horse represents scarcity and economic hardship. Famine, driven by both natural and man-made causes, will become more severe as the tribulation draws near, highlighting the fragility of humanity’s resources.

In Romans 8:22, Paul writes about the suffering of creation:
“For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.”

Earthquakes, pestilences, and other natural disasters are manifestations of a creation in distress, longing for restoration. These events serve as a wake-up call, signaling that the culmination of God’s plan is near.

The Rise of Deception: False Christs and False Prophets

Another key sign that Jesus warns about is the rise of false Christs and false prophets. As the end approaches, many will come, claiming to be the Messiah or a chosen leader, deceiving people with false signs and wonders.

In Matthew 24:5, Jesus cautions:
“For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.”

The rise of false teachers and self-proclaimed saviors reflects the spiritual deception that will intensify in the last days. These figures will exploit the fear and uncertainty of the times, leading many astray with promises of peace and salvation apart from Jesus.

2 Peter 2:1 warns about the danger of such false teachers:
“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.”

The deception will be pervasive, targeting even the elect. This sign underscores the importance of discernment and a firm foundation in God’s Word, as spiritual deception will be one of the defining characteristics of the end times.

The Increase of Lawlessness and Moral Decline

As the signs intensify, there will be a marked increase in lawlessness and a general decline in moral standards. Society will become increasingly corrupt, with sin and rebellion against God reaching new heights. This moral decay is both a symptom of humanity’s rejection of God and a sign of the impending tribulation.

In Matthew 24:12, Jesus highlights this moral decline:
“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”

The increase in lawlessness signifies a turning away from God’s commands, leading to widespread injustice and a lack of love. The natural affection that people once had for one another will diminish, replaced by selfishness and hostility.

2 Timothy 3:1-2 describes the moral state of humanity in the last days:
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.”

This passage paints a bleak picture of the end times, where people are driven by self-interest and devoid of godly character. The breakdown of social and moral order is a clear sign that the tribulation is drawing near.

The Global Proclamation of the Gospel

In the midst of these signs, there is also a powerful and positive indicator: the global spread of the gospel. Despite the rising deception and conflict, the message of Jesus Christ will reach every corner of the earth. This widespread proclamation of the gospel is not only a sign of hope but also a final opportunity for repentance before the tribulation begins.

In Matthew 24:14, Jesus declares:
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”

The global proclamation of the gospel serves as a witness to every nation, giving all people the opportunity to hear the truth of God’s kingdom. It is a sign of God’s mercy, extending His invitation of salvation even in the face of impending judgment.

Revelation 14:6 offers a vision of this worldwide evangelism:
“Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people.”

This passage highlights the urgency and scope of the gospel message in the last days. It is a final call to repentance, reminding the world that God’s offer of grace remains open until the very end.

Conclusion: A Call to Watchfulness and Readiness

The signs that precede the Great Tribulation are clear indicators of the approaching end times. Jesus provided these warnings not to instill fear but to prepare His followers for what is to come. As we witness these signs unfold in our world, we are reminded of the urgency to live faithfully, share the gospel, and remain steadfast in our hope.

In Luke 21:28, Jesus offers a word of encouragement:
“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

1 Thessalonians 5:6 exhorts believers:
“Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.”

These verses remind us to remain alert and vigilant. The signs of the times are unfolding before us, signaling that the day of the Lord is near. May we be found ready, watching and waiting with anticipation for the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
