Faith is Trusting God When We Don’t Understand

One of the most important lessons the Bible teaches about faith is that it often requires trusting God when we don’t understand what He is doing. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” When we face difficult circumstances, our natural tendency is to try to figure everything out. We may ask, “Why is this happening?” or “How will I get through this?” However, faith calls us to trust in God’s wisdom, even when we don’t understand His plan.

The story of Job illustrates this type of trust. Job suffered unimaginable loss—his children, his health, and his wealth were all taken from him. Despite not understanding why God allowed such suffering, Job held onto his faith. Job 13:15 records his bold declaration, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” Job’s faith didn’t depend on his ability to comprehend God’s actions. Instead, he trusted God’s character, believing that God’s purposes were good, even when they were hidden from him. Faith in difficult circumstances means trusting God’s heart when we cannot trace His hand.

Faith Looks Beyond Present Circumstances to God’s Promises

Faith in difficult times also requires us to look beyond our present circumstances and focus on the promises of God. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is not based on what we can see with our eyes, but on what God has promised in His Word. This means that even when we face hardship, we hold onto the assurance that God’s promises will be fulfilled, no matter what our current situation looks like.

Abraham is an example of someone whose faith looked beyond his circumstances. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, even though he and his wife Sarah were old and childless. Romans 4:18-21 says, “Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.” Abraham’s faith was not weakened by the impossibility of his circumstances. Instead, he was strengthened by focusing on God’s promises. In difficult times, faith calls us to lift our eyes above our current struggles and fix them on the certainty of God’s promises.

Faith Perseveres in the Face of Trials

Faith is not just believing for a moment; it is a steadfast commitment to trust God through prolonged difficulties. The Bible teaches that faith requires perseverance, especially in trials. James 1:2-4 encourages us, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” Trials are not a sign that God has abandoned us; instead, they are opportunities for our faith to grow stronger. When our faith is tested through difficult circumstances, it produces perseverance and builds spiritual maturity.

The life of Joseph is an example of persevering faith. Sold into slavery by his brothers, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph faced years of suffering and hardship. Yet, through it all, he remained faithful to God, trusting in His ultimate plan. Genesis 50:20 reveals Joseph’s perspective when he finally saw God’s purposes: “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.” Joseph’s perseverance through trials allowed God to fulfill His greater purpose, not only in Joseph’s life but also in the lives of many others. Faith that perseveres in difficult circumstances trusts that God is working for good, even when we cannot see the outcome.

Faith Relies on God’s Strength, Not Our Own

In difficult circumstances, faith requires us to rely on God’s strength rather than our own. When we face overwhelming situations, we may be tempted to rely on our own abilities, resources, or understanding. However, faith teaches us to depend fully on God’s strength, recognizing that He is our source of help. Isaiah 40:29-31 promises, “He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Faith acknowledges our weakness and looks to God to supply the strength we need to endure.

The apostle Paul experienced this firsthand. In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Paul describes how God responded to his request to remove a “thorn in the flesh”: “And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Paul’s faith allowed him to see his weaknesses not as liabilities, but as opportunities for God’s power to be displayed in his life. In difficult circumstances, faith turns our dependence from ourselves to the all-sufficient strength of God.

Faith Brings Peace in the Midst of the Storm

Faith in difficult circumstances not only sustains us but also brings peace in the midst of the storm. Jesus Himself demonstrated this peace during a storm on the Sea of Galilee. While His disciples were panicking, fearing for their lives, Jesus was asleep in the boat. Mark 4:39-40 records how Jesus responded to their fear: “Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, ‘Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?'” Jesus showed that faith in God brings peace, even when the circumstances around us are chaotic.

When we have faith in God, we can experience peace because we trust that He is in control, no matter how difficult the situation may be. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Faith allows us to release our anxieties to God, trusting that He will take care of us. This trust produces a peace that goes beyond human understanding, a peace that guards our hearts and minds even when we face trials.

Faith Keeps Our Eyes on Jesus

Finally, faith in difficult circumstances keeps our eyes fixed on Jesus. When Peter stepped out of the boat to walk on water, his faith allowed him to do the impossible. However, when he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. Matthew 14:30-31 records this moment: “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’ And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?'” This account teaches us that faith in difficult circumstances is not about ignoring the challenges, but about keeping our focus on Jesus, who is greater than the storm.

When we focus on our problems, our faith can falter, but when we fix our eyes on Jesus, our faith is strengthened. Hebrews 12:2 urges us, “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus is both the source and perfecter of our faith. When we focus on Him, we find the strength to endure any challenge, knowing that He is with us and that He has already secured the victory.

Conclusion: Faith Sustains Us Through Every Difficulty

The Bible teaches us that faith is essential in difficult circumstances. Faith trusts God when we don’t understand, looks beyond our present situation to His promises, and perseveres through trials. It relies on God’s strength rather than our own, brings peace in the midst of the storm, and keeps our eyes fixed on Jesus. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” In every difficulty we face, faith calls us to trust in God’s presence, His promises, and His power, knowing that He will carry us through.
