In His conversation with the rich young ruler, Jesus explains the cost of entering the Kingdom of God. The young man sought to know how he could obtain eternal life, and Jesus responded by challenging him to go beyond merely keeping the commandments. In Matthew 19:21, Jesus says: “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” Jesus’ invitation to “follow Me” is an invitation to enter the Kingdom of God by embracing Him as Lord and King.

The young man’s response reveals the difficulty of surrendering earthly attachments for the sake of the Kingdom. Jesus then explains to His disciples the challenge of entering the Kingdom for those who trust in riches, but He also gives them a promise about the rewards of choosing the Kingdom over worldly possessions.

In Matthew 19:29, Jesus declares: “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.” Here, Jesus connects entering the Kingdom of God with inheriting eternal life. Those who choose to follow Jesus, forsaking the things of this world for the sake of the Kingdom, receive a reward far greater than anything they leave behind—they receive eternal life.

In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Paul writes: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” Paul’s words emphasize that inheriting the Kingdom is a privilege reserved for those who have been transformed by God’s grace and live in obedience to His will.

Inheriting the Kingdom means receiving the full benefits of eternal life. It is the ultimate reward for those who are faithful to God, a reward that surpasses anything this world can offer. In James 2:5, we read: “Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?” This inheritance is a gift of God’s grace, given to those who love Him and live by faith. In Revelation 21:3-4, John gives us a vision of the final fulfillment of eternal life in the Kingdom of God: “And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’” This is the glorious future of the Kingdom—eternal life in the very presence of God, free from all suffering and death.

The connection between the Kingdom of God and eternal life is one of promise and fulfillment. It is the hope that sustains us, the assurance that we will one day live in perfect communion with our Creator. Until that day, we are called to live as citizens of the Kingdom, sharing the good news of eternal life with the world and inviting others to experience the joy of God’s reign.
