Following Jesus is not a retreat into ease—it is a march into enemy territory. Discipleship is not just a journey of inner transformation but a call to spiritual battle. Every disciple, whether they realize it or not, is engaged in a war that is unseen but intensely real. This war is not against people or circumstances—it is against spiritual forces that oppose the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 6:10-12
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Paul makes it clear: discipleship involves warfare. As we grow in Christ, we become targets of the enemy—but we are not left defenseless. Discipleship trains us to stand, to fight, and to overcome. It teaches us that spiritual strength does not come from ourselves but from being rooted in Christ and clothed in His power.
Mature disciples are not surprised by resistance—they are prepared for it. They know the enemy is real, but they also know the victory has already been won in Christ. Discipleship equips believers to fight from victory, not for it.
The armor Paul describes in Ephesians 6 is not something believers can casually pick up in times of crisis—it is something that must be worn daily, fitted to a life of disciplined obedience. Each piece is tied to core aspects of discipleship: truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer.
Ephesians 6:13-18
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
Discipleship teaches believers how to put on this armor piece by piece:
Truth grounds the disciple in God’s reality over the world’s deception.
Righteousness is developed as the disciple learns to walk in holiness.
Gospel readiness grows as the disciple understands their calling to witness.
Faith is built through testing, teaching, and trust in God’s promises.
Salvation becomes an anchor of identity and assurance.
The Word is not just read—it is wielded with understanding and power.
Prayer becomes a lifeline, not a last resort.
The armor is not abstract. It is practical. And it becomes part of the disciple’s daily life through intentional growth, obedience, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
The battleground of spiritual warfare often lies within the mind. The enemy seeks to plant lies, fuel fear, distort truth, and entangle the disciple in strongholds of unbelief, shame, and confusion. Discipleship brings these hidden battles into the light and trains the believer to take every thought captive.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
Discipleship engages the thought life. It renews the mind through the Word of God, teaches discernment, and confronts mental strongholds with the authority of Christ. Disciples are not taught to ignore spiritual attack—they are trained to recognize it and respond with truth.
As the disciple grows in maturity, their mind is no longer ruled by fear or fleshly patterns but by the wisdom of heaven. They learn to identify the lies of the enemy and counter them with the unshakable promises of Scripture.
Spiritual warfare is not won in a moment; it is often waged over time. Discipleship strengthens spiritual endurance, teaching believers to remain faithful when the pressure intensifies. The disciple who is anchored in Christ does not run when the battle gets hard—they stand firm, knowing their strength comes from the Lord.
James 1:12
“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
Discipleship trains the heart to endure trials, temptation, and opposition with steadfast love for Jesus. It builds spiritual muscle, deepens resolve, and produces a quiet courage that cannot be shaken. Disciples learn not just how to survive spiritual warfare, but how to overcome in it.
The enemy does not oppose those who are idle—he opposes those who are advancing the kingdom of God. As disciples become more aligned with God’s purposes, they will encounter more resistance. But they will also be empowered with divine authority to prevail.
Spiritual warfare is not just defensive—it is also offensive. Discipleship equips believers to push back darkness, proclaim truth, heal the broken, and tear down the enemy’s lies with the gospel. Every act of obedience, every soul won, every prayer prayed is an act of war against the kingdom of darkness.
Matthew 16:18
“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
Jesus is building a Church that moves forward, not backward—a Church that is discipled, equipped, and unafraid. Through discipleship, believers become that Church: grounded in truth, filled with power, and ready for battle.
To follow Jesus is to enter the fight.
To be a disciple is to be a soldier in His army.
And discipleship is the training ground where warriors are forged.
So take up your armor.
Let the Word renew your mind.
Let prayer become your breath.
Stand firm. Fight strong.
And remember—
You are not fighting for victory.
You are fighting from it.
For the battle belongs to the Lord,
And the disciple who is trained in Christ
Will not only stand in the day of war—
They will advance with boldness,
For the glory of the King.
