The Millennium is a period of a thousand years in which Jesus Christ will establish His kingdom on earth, ruling with perfect justice and righteousness. One of the remarkable aspects of this future time is that Christ will not rule alone; He will share His authority with those who have faithfully served Him. The Bible teaches that certain groups of believers will be given the privilege of reigning with Christ, participating in His divine governance. Understanding who these co-rulers are and why they are chosen provides us with a profound insight into God’s redemptive plan and His promises to His people.
In Revelation 20:4-6, John describes the vision of the saints reigning with Christ:
“And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”
This passage highlights the distinct group of people who will reign with Christ. Let’s explore who these co-rulers are and what qualifies them for this unique role.
One of the groups explicitly mentioned as reigning with Christ during the Millennium are the martyrs—those who were persecuted and killed for their testimony of Jesus. These believers stood firm in their faith, refusing to worship the beast or receive his mark, even at the cost of their own lives. Their unwavering commitment to Christ, despite intense persecution, qualifies them to share in His reign.
In Matthew 5:10-12, Jesus speaks of the blessedness of those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake:
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.”
The martyrs’ willingness to endure suffering for the sake of Christ is rewarded with a place of honor in His kingdom. They are granted thrones and given the responsibility of judgment, sharing in the authority of Christ as a testament to their faithfulness.
In 2 Timothy 2:11-12, Paul emphasizes the promise of reigning with Christ:
“This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him.”
The promise of reigning with Christ is not limited to a select few but extends to all who endure suffering and remain steadfast in their faith. The martyrs, in particular, exemplify this endurance, and their reward is to rule alongside the King they faithfully served.
The Bible also indicates that all believers who overcome the trials and temptations of this life through faith in Jesus will share in His reign. The term “overcomers” refers to those who have remained faithful to Christ, resisting the enticements of the world and the deception of the enemy. These believers are promised a special role in the millennial kingdom as co-rulers with Christ.
In Revelation 3:21, Jesus makes a promise to the overcomers:
“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”
This incredible promise shows the intimacy of the relationship between Christ and the overcomers. Just as Jesus was victorious over sin and death and was exalted to sit with the Father, so too will the faithful be exalted to reign with Him. This shared authority is a sign of the close fellowship and partnership between Christ and His people.
In 1 John 5:4-5, the apostle John defines who the overcomers are:
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
According to John, every believer who has genuine faith in Christ is an overcomer. This means that the promise of reigning with Christ is available to all who have placed their trust in Him and have lived out their faith victoriously. The Millennium will be a time when these overcomers are honored for their faithfulness and given the privilege of sharing in Christ’s governance.
The reign of Christ during the Millennium will also include the faithful saints of the Old Testament. Throughout the Old Testament, God made promises to His people about a future kingdom where they would reign with the Messiah. These promises find their fulfillment during the Millennium, when the Old Testament saints are resurrected and included in Christ’s rule.
In Daniel 7:27, the prophet Daniel speaks of the kingdom given to the saints:
“Then the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.”
This prophecy shows that the saints of old, who looked forward to the coming of the Messiah, will participate in His millennial reign. Their faith and obedience to God’s covenant, even before the coming of Christ, qualifies them to share in the blessings of His kingdom.
In Hebrews 11:39-40, the writer of Hebrews acknowledges the faith of the Old Testament saints:
“And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
This passage indicates that the Old Testament saints, though they did not see the fulfillment of God’s promises in their lifetimes, will be included in the resurrection and reign with Christ during the Millennium. Their faith in God’s future deliverance is honored as they share in the blessings of His kingdom.
The church, described as the Bride of Christ, will also share in the millennial reign of Jesus. Believers from the church age, who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, will be united with Him and given positions of authority in His kingdom. This special relationship between Christ and His church is marked by love, unity, and a shared inheritance.
In Ephesians 5:25-27, Paul describes the relationship between Christ and the church:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.”
The church, as the Bride of Christ, is purified and made ready for this reign. The union of Christ and His church is consummated during the Millennium, as the believers are given authority to rule with Him, reflecting His glory and righteousness.
In Revelation 19:7-8, the marriage of the Lamb and His Bride is celebrated:
“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”
This union symbolizes the close partnership between Christ and the church. The Bride of Christ, adorned in righteousness, will reign with Him, sharing in His glory and participating in His kingdom work.
The co-rulers with Christ during the Millennium include faithful martyrs, overcomers, Old Testament saints, and the Bride of Christ. This diverse group reflects God’s redemptive work across all ages, highlighting His faithfulness to reward those who have been steadfast in their faith. The privilege of reigning with Christ is a testament to His grace and a fulfillment of His promises. It is a time when His people, having been purified and made holy, will share in His authority and glory, ruling over a restored earth and bringing about His righteous reign. The Millennium is not only a time of Christ’s victory but also a celebration of the faithfulness of His people who will reign with Him forever.
